FDR For The Last Time

I can't remember when this was filmed, but it had to be at least in 2009.

I used to spend Sunday mornings at FDR with Tyler Kline skating the mini ramp and surrounding smaller obstacles at the part. That didn't last for too long because I injured my leg on this ramp a few weeks later and called it quits for a couple of years. So, this was the last time at FDR.

Having grown tired of the Brothers Grimm, and little kids complaining that there weren't enough bright colors on their skateboards, Slapstik has responded with Animals. Animals, I couldn't think of a clever name, is a collection of drawings, photos, and glue, illustrating the stupid things that people do and the animals who fight back. The first two of this series are Sharkbling, available in 8.3" and an 8" zinger, and The Deerhunter, available in 7.8" and a new 8" with a 14.25" wheelbase. These decks will be available very soon at a skateshop smart enough to carry them.

American Red Cross

SLAP ZINGERS are 8" at the widest point, and 31" long with a 6.5" nose, 6.75" tail and 14" wheelbase. OLD SCHOOLS ( the dead guy in the middle) are 9"wide, 31" long, with a 6" nose, 6.25" tail, and 14.5" wheelbase. I don't know how many ZINGERS will get made, but OLD SCHOOLS are on order with all new graphics coming late June/early July. Once these zombies are gone, they're not coming back, but you might be lucky to order on from Nocturnal or Exit in Philadelphia, or Push in North Carolina.

...i see Fred occasionally at the Old Man Skate Sesh's on Sunday's..i had an idea for an art thing, brought it up to Fred and he eventually brought his Check Out to me....he got it from his mom's wall and brought it to me framed out...I have this magazine. too bad i can't find it..was one of my first skate mags ever. it's at my mom's house. it's fuckin' Fred Reeves! he doesn't care, but we do! when he gave me this, i asked about the background story...he went to some contest in AL. with some friends and during the contest the photo guy, who he was already friends with, came to him and said that Transworld was gonna start doing this thing called "Check Out's" and wanted to get a flick of Fred for one.."Now this was before it was all cool to do that, so i just went to the parking lot and shot a photo." Epic. that nonchalant thing has been ingrained in my brain since i was a child. i grew up in a redneck town in middle GA and had people dog me for being a faggot, pussy, etc...and reading that someone from Atlanta had a picture in a California magazine astounded me! something to touch and see as real, ya know?...maybe not...whatever...

...yeah, yeah, yeah. it's cheesy and gay. i AM lame for liking Christina Aguilera. whatever. heard it all before. i used to like her a bunch. like the music. the looks didn't hurt either. i had trading cards, a calendar, a c.d., a REMIX c.d......so i was kinda in there as far as fanship goes...besides, those were the Seaboard days...shit was always weird and i wasn't the weirdest in the bunch...my friend Lee Bender worked at the Barnes And Noble on Ponce...probably like a week...not a bad stretch of employment at the time...i mean, he DID go get a job...however, he showed up at the apartment the night he quit with this 4' x4' bad ass promo thing he stole from the window display on his way out...he drove a tiny ass convertible Miata and drove through the city holding this thing in the passenger seat.....hilarious! and i was so so stoked! this thing quickly found a spot in the living room and there she sat til we all moved out....now she's in the basement...i'm still petitioning for her to be bumped up to the living room...girlfriend says no.....
...after Seaboard, Lee moved to AZ and i've rarely seen him. every so often he pops up in the mags...but then i hear he had M.S. and shit wasn't the same with him...not sure of the severity of it, but i do know those hospital bills are expensive and he didn't have insurance....I heard Real was doing a board to help with his bills and the ole "no-brainer"... bought this shit for full price! 47$....also came with all the Rise Skateshop vids and a "best of" type thing of Lee....stokage....this is a permanent wall fixture....thanks for everything Lee...hope shit's going well!

A long night at Day One

I spent Friday driving up to Bridgeport, Ct with my friends Kerry and Rob. The 3 1/2 hour ride up was filled with conversations and commentary about skateboarding politics in Philadelphia, girls, and flameboy tattoos on the taint. We arrived at Day One with plenty of time to set up the show and watch the new Flip video enough times to give commentary on our commentary, mostly revolving around Bob Burnquist, but that's for another blog. I got to meet everyone involved in the Day One scene thanks to Jeffery Walsh, owner of the shop and master of cardboard cut-out puppetry. The show went up, and lots of people came out throughout the night. We at pizza and peanut-butter filled pretzels while talking about human trafficking and jazzy scooters. Here are just a few pics from the night that in no way convey how bad Kerry needed to wash his hands.

....most people will never forget is the first time seeing skateboarding as something more than butt-boarding down a hill. my mom rented for me, from the local video store in Gray, GA, a bike video and this skate vid for the weekend. i was real into bikes. not any good at 'em cause i was too little to get it off the ground. but, i remember putting this in and was like "what the fuck?!" only in 9 year old terms. granted, looking back it's cheesy as hell but this will always hold a spot in my memory. the thing has a "plot" i suppose and it goes like: this dude is skating to school, skates through the halls, looks at skate mags in class, gets called to the principal's office, LEAVES school to go skate and comes back like 3 hours later to a pissed principal. and while he's looking through the mag, different skate sections start. and the music was just unreal to my little country boy/ACDC mind. who is TSOL? what the fuck kinda music is that? look at that big ass concrete ramp! dude lit his board on fire and skates that ramp?! that dudes got the craziest hair ever! how are they making it jump? how do you do this? i wanna skateboard! i ditched the bike videos from there on out and rented Shackle Me Not and Public Domain, along with Summer Sessions every weekend. and a few months later when i convinced mom and dad to get me a board, that shit was lit up and hasn't burned out yet........

Planting roots with Tyler Kline

Months ago I was asked to put something together for the zine Jeremiah was publishing in Atlanta. I decided to interview a long time friend and former rider for raped inc. skateboards Tyler Kline. Tyler is currently attending the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art for a masters in sculpture and lives in Philadelphia with his wife and son.

Looking back at the time you spent in Savanah and living on Seaboard Ave, did you ever see yourself living the family life with a garden in Philadelphia?

Honestly, my foresight did not include my present circumstances. It never crossed my mind to settle down until I met my wife Anna in Portland. In my green grass of youth, I spent most of my time traveling and gathering life experiences. I kept a couple of central bases, traversing the North American Continent from the East Coast to the West Coast 17 times between 1998 and 2003, by plane, train, and automobile. I glad I made those choices when I was younger. Now, I enjoy growing roots. I take pride in the sacrifices one must make to cultivate a mature life.

For as long as I've known you, you've always been tied to the art scene where ever you've lived. I know that in Portland, you had a gallery downtown. What are you doing these days to stay connected with Philadelphia?

I work at the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts as a conservation technician. I also do volunteer work for Inliquid.com. Recently I joined an the Art Collective of Little Berlin. I am very excited to be a part of this talented team of local Artists. Philadelphia is in a unique position to further and deepen or understanding of art and the role it plays in building communities. With the decline of this recent Gilded Age, and as all around us is seems as if the center is not holding it becomes dire that the margins and fringes of society hold fast, and lead as examples toward a more sustainable solution to the general collapse we are experiencing at home and abroad. Art groups, charities, historical societies and other non-profit orginizations, and ordinary citizens have the power to maintain and transform their neighborhoods. By being involved with the arts in the various places were I have lived is a small token toward trying to leave things in better shape than you found them.

How important is it to have something in your life apart from skateboarding?

It is very important to cultivate things in your life other than skateboarding, skateboarding in finite and the skateboarding industry is based on bankable trends that come out of Southern California. At best, skateboarding can be seen as a type of performance art, a dance. The marketed image of skateboarding is ever straying from this view point. Luckly I have gained the wisdom to no longer concern myself with the trends put forth in most skateboard media.

How has skateboarding changed for you now that you've got so many things on your plate?

I simply do not skateboard as much as I used to. I still find time to skateboard, and I am teaching my three year old son Max to skateboard. I do these things when the time comes, skateboarding does not dictate how I use my time.

Would you say that you have a mild obsession with the eye ball?

None of my obsessions are mild. Since the time of the Syrians the eye is seen as a window into the soul. However, I try to be playful with these flights of fancy,

i used to go to these shows every time he came into town. it was the highlight of my month! if you've ever heard anything by Reggie Cunningham, you're probably singing in your head either "titty full of beer", "do you you wanna get high with Reggie" or "wine and fried chicken" right now.....his shows are complete and utter anything goes, fucking wasted, beer slinging, ignorant belligerence. i had some photos i thought i'd put up to explain a little of the blacked out madness of these shows in Atlanta....
the stages are tiny and for some reason or another when the music starts people, who have bought 1-2 extra PBR's beforehand, shake beers up and shit starts flying towards Reggie. most times, he's the one who initiates it...
i swear the last few times i went to see him i was gonna do the "just chill night dude. not trying to get crazy and shit, ya know? it's just too much at his shows." then i'll see him all half drunk about an hour before he goes on and the switch in my brain turns to "fuck it! jaeger now! let's do this!" thank god Scott Wagoner is always down too. 5 shots and shotgunned beers get the adrenaline moving...
i'm not claiming "number 1 fan" but i do know all the words and when certain songs come up i can't control the urge to sing with or for ole' reggie...usually it's "primary colors" or "ass shakin"...
right up front is where the action gets the dirtiest...u gotta fight to get up there...
people are either there to see Reggie or are super freaked the fucked out by the end of it...
backside of the stage at the end of it all...Reggie's usually soaked from slipping and falling, being wasted and laying down in the shit or just done by the end of it all....dude's a trooper...google his name Mr. Move and watch the youtube vids for more confirmation of the best night you have yet to have...go ahead and call into work the next day....no point in lying to yourself...

When you spend a couple years of your life studying the undead, and how to kill them...again, you're bound to come across the work of Tom Savini. Tom's break through into film occurred when George Romero called him up and asked him to start thinking of ways to kill people. Not real people, but special effects for the 1978 film Dawn of the Dead. One of Dawn's most famous scenes occurs in the opening 20 minutes when the police storm a housing project infested with zombies and one of them gets shot, you guessed it...in the head causing it to explode. I never thought I would meet the guy responsible for this, and how I have at of all places a comic book convention in Philadelphia. Thanks for all the hard work Mr. Savini.

Deck shapes are the usual 7.8"and 8", and the new 8.125" with a 14.125" wheelbase, 7" nose, and 6.625" tail. The 7.8" and 8.125" decks will be full color with a red base, black line, and tan frame. The 8" will have a white, or natural wood base, black line, and red flames and letters. Only 35 of these will be made, so I don't need to tell you they won't last long. Every time I go to Nashville we always have to skate this slippery ass indoor park. And every time I get wrecked. Head knocker's, pop my elbow out of socket, ankle's, whatever. So, to make lemonade out of lemons I skate down to the strip and start my night/afternoons at these amazing country bars. Free admission, free music from 11 am til 2 am, and 2 dollar beers. Not like you have to convince me. It's this or sitting in some hotel room.

So here we go. Door guy at Robert's bar. He takes no shit from no one. I've seen him choke slam some dude from inside the bar to out for grabbin some girl's ass. Also down to talk to wasted dudes about old country singers he sees out and about down on the strip.

old Traffic tour stuff.....

...we started this traffic trip in Knoxville Tn and this was the first night everyone got together. the day after this was demo mode and we pretty much spent each day and night the same. day time was 100 plus heat, driving, dehydration and skating. nights were meant to be spent reflecting on the day's activities and getting in the room early so our kickflips and tailslides would impress kids enough to buy some shit...that early night shit never happened and nights were usually more fun.....as go the majority of skate trips...this photo was the start of our nights. keep the pitchers at dinner flowin, throw a couple shots in there and you're off!....

I guess Jeff had done brought some Wild Turkey from home and had been sippin off that as well cause a little later in the afternoon he starts in on them X-treme TV shows they got on TV. He likes that Nitrus Circus one, cause he used to do that motor cross stuff when he was a kid, 'member? But started talkin bout one of 'em named Rob's Funhouse or somethin with a skateboard dude on it and how they were sissies cause they could just jump off the thing and on and on and on. We told him he could keep that shit to his self and went on bout our business. Next thing I know, he's down there messsin with them skater dudes ,tauntin 'em. Me and Tim go down there to pull his ass back up to the truck and he's all...."I can do that shit boy. Ya'll ain't take nothin ride around on this thing!" So, he goes up top of the ramp take's one of 'ems board and 'bout that time I'm all..."Better put that thing down boy. You gone bust yer ass!" He didn't like that much and started cussin at me. So i pulled out my camera and was all "Let's see it bad-ass. Let's see ya walk the walk!" He put that thing on the edge of the ramp and said...."Fuck all ya'll sons-a-bitches! Watch this....!"

Slapstik Stencil

At this point in production, not everyone will have access to getting their hands on a Slapstik board. So, to help resolve the situation I've created a stencil you can apply to your grip tape, or deck to let others know you're cooler than them. It's really easy to make. Just click on the image and drag it to your desktop. The size is already set to 6"x6". To make cutting it out easier, use a hole punch to get the little circles, and an exacto blade to get the curves. Make it as fancy, or as simple as you like. Slapstik's art direction is co-operative, so it's yours just as much as it's mine. and it's free. enjoy.

Slapstik announces it's second return with contemporary visual interpretations of Mother Goose. Starting off the series is Humpty Dumpty, pictured above, with building jumper in a suit, plunging to his death. In this particular case, Humpty represents capitalism free of regulations, and supervision. The United States suffered an economic "great fall" in 1929 with the crash of the market, followed by the great depression of the 30's. Bear with me, I've been listening to NPR and AM talk radio to get both sides of the story, but as far as I can tell, the fall is a result of bankers playing hot potato with bad loans. Here's how it works. If I loan you $5 without proof of employment, or assets from you, I can then sell you're loan balance, with interest, to a third party, thus making a profit with minimal risk. The third party can then sell your loan to a fourth party, hopefully before you default on your loan, to continue making money from nothing. This continues until either the loan goes into default, or the system collapses because there's no real money to prop it up. That was the thinking behind this graphic. You can expect this kind of description for every Slapstik graphic, along with detailed analysis of the concepts and production. By the way, if you search images of people jumping off buildings, they all fall the same way.
